Harder foods eaten in moderation can help strengthen our teeth and gums. In fact, if all we ate were soft foods, our enamel could actually deteriorate. Yes it’s true… Our teeth need to work out. But there are proper and improper ways to strengthen our smiles. Let’s talk about a few dos and don’ts.
Do:
- Eat raw vegetables and fruit. There’s grinding and healthy resistance when you eat these kinds of foods—which can be strengthening. But it’s also gentle and less likely to cause damage.
- If you eat meat, eat tough meat once in a while—like a steak. According to the American Dental Association, the phosphorus in red meat also helps protect tooth enamel and bone. Each slice of sirloin provides a good, prolonged chew giving your teeth and gums some good exercise. Be sure to thoroughly chew each bite.
- Eat nuts, but eat them carefully. Our enamel is hard but it can fracture. Chew with caution.
Don’t:
- Try not to clench your jaw or grind your teeth. This can lead to microfractures.
- Never use your teeth to open packages, bottles, or to bite your nails. Using your teeth as scissors or a knife can damage your smile and your dental work. Biting your nails is not only unsanitary and potentially damaging, but it can also cause teeth to shift.
- Crunching on ice cubes is NOT a good idea. Let the ice cool your drink, not damage your smile.

It’s Not So Much About Makeup And Primping
Women in many countries annually spend up to $8 billion on makeup. And, the average woman in those countries spends 20 minutes a day (or more) applying it. But according to a Wrigley Gum study where participants looked at thousands of photos of women smiling with makeup, smiling without makeup, not smiling with makeup, and not smiling without makeup, the study found that both men AND women think that a smile makes a person more attractive than makeup does (and it may save a woman 20 minutes a day)!

Why are smiles so attractive to us? A smile is a “social cue”. It can signal apology, welcome, gratitude, or celebration. A smile means “you’re clear to approach” and we all react to it subconsciously.

Sometimes it’s unwise to judge a book by its cover, but the importance of a first impression is undeniable. A recent survey of over 5,000 singles found that both men (58%) and women (71%) judge the opposite sex MOST on their teeth.

There are lots of ways we can improve our appearance and stay looking younger. As a Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist I do lots of smile enhancements and smile makeovers for patients who are unhappy with their smile. They aren’t alone. A poll conducted by the American Academy of Periodontology found the following:
- 50 percent of people consider the smile the first facial feature they notice (I actually think this number is higher!)
- 80 percent are not happy with their smile
- Respondents were seven times more likely to have smile enhancement procedures, than face-lifts
- Smile enhancement procedures outnumbered eyelid surgeries five to one
The wonderful thing about enhancing or making over your smile is that it gives you a more youthful, more polished look but no one can quite put their finger on what you’ve had done!
