Questions about Invisalign.

How long does Invisalign take?

It depends mainly on how far your teeth need to move and how consistently you wear your aligners. Mild crowding or small gaps generally take less time than more involved crowding or bite problems, and missed wear time can lengthen treatment. Our certified Invisalign providers give you a realistic estimate at your consultation, and our article on how long Invisalign takes explains the factors in more detail.

Can Invisalign correct an overbite?

Often, yes. Invisalign can treat many mild to moderate bite problems, including overbites, underbites, crossbites and open bites, as well as crowding and gaps. When the jaw needs to find a new position first, or the bite itself needs rebuilding, Dr. Frey may recommend neuromuscular orthodontics or bite correction instead of, or alongside, aligners.

Should I choose Invisalign or braces?

It depends on how your teeth need to move and on how you live. Clear aligners suit many mild to moderate cases, are nearly invisible and come out for eating and brushing, but they only work when worn most of the day and night, while fixed braces can suit more complex movements. We talk through both with you after examining your teeth and bite, and our article on invisible braces and traditional braces compares them side by side.

Is Invisalign only for adults?

No. Teens can wear Invisalign as well as adults, and age matters less than how your teeth need to move and whether the aligners will be worn as directed. Our article on Invisalign for teens answers common concerns from parents.

Can you eat with Invisalign in?

No. Take your aligners out to eat, or to drink anything other than plain water, because chewing can crack them, heat can warp them, and food trapped underneath can stain them and raise the risk of decay. Brush or rinse before you put them back in, and keep them in their case rather than wrapped in a napkin. Our article on eating with Invisalign has more practical tips.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Once your last aligner is finished, a custom clear retainer, sometimes called a Vivera retainer, holds your teeth in their new position while the bone and ligaments around them settle. You wear it much as you wore your aligners at first, then gradually less, until it is worn only while you sleep. Our article on the Invisalign retainer explains why this stage matters as much as the aligners themselves.
