Types Of Dental Lasers

Dr. Frey utilizes two separate lasers (Argon and Diode) at his practice to assist him with cosmetic dentistry procedures that involve laser dentistry techniques.

Argon Laser

The Argon laser is an alternative light source that is used during teeth whitening by bleaching the teeth. Dr. Frey also employs that laser to create a stronger bond during the placement of porcelain veneers by photocuring the resin composite. The Argon laser is FDA approved and available for our Los Angeles area patients.

Diode Laser

The diode laser is considered a compact laser and is used for soft tissue laser dentistry procedures. Many patients find that laser dentistry with the diode laser is preferable to traditional dentistry due to the accuracy of the beam. Pain and swelling are greatly reduced as the laser beam’s accuracy minimizes damage to surrounding tissue. With the help of laser dentistry, several procedures can be performed during a single appointment.

Laser Dental Treatments

The most common soft tissue laser dentistry procedure provided at our Beverly Hills/LA cosmetic dentistry practice is gum line treatments. By using this laser dentistry technique, Dr. Frey can change the appearance of a smile through gum line manipulation. The diode laser can reshape a patient’s gums to create symmetry. The laser dentistry treatment will give smaller teeth a larger appearance while reducing the appearance of larger teeth.

What Is Laser Gum Contouring?

Gummy smiles can be a source of embarrassment. They can be the result of genetics, taking certain prescription drugs, or from various health problems. In gum contouring, the gum line is raised so that more of the crown of the tooth is visible. Gum contouring makes your teeth look longer, a key to improving your smile.

Prior to the advent of dental lasers, gum contouring was done with a scalpel. As you would assume, this created a painful, lengthy recovery. Now, thanks to our laser technology, Dr. Frey’s gum contouring procedures are fast, simple, and virtually painless.

How Is Gum Contouring Done?

The gums and surrounding area are completely numbed prior to your procedure. Dr. Frey uses the diode laser for gum contouring. The laser energy gently cuts away excess gum tissue, creating a more uniform, natural-looking scalloped gum line.

Our diode laser instantly vaporizes the unwanted gum tissue, simultaneously cauterizing the cutting line. This has numerous advantages:

What Can Gum Contouring Correct?

When your gums are too high on the teeth, they make your teeth look shorter. This also makes people focus on this when speaking with you. You know it as a “gummy smile.” Dr. Frey uses a diode laser for gum contouring, lengthening the visible portion of the tooth. This procedure is very effective, yet incredibly easy to take.

What To Expect During Recovery

The difference in recovery between scalpel and laser gum contouring is amazing. After your procedure with Dr. Frey, your gums will be slightly swollen and a little sore. This can last a few days. The discomfort is minimal, however, and it doesn’t stop you from being able to eat and drink normally. You’ll need to avoid overly spicy foods and foods with seeds for a few days, but that’s all. Any discomfort will be manageable with ibuprofen.

Are Dental Lasers Dangerous For Teeth?

The FDA first approved lasers for dental use in 1994. The laser wavelength is set to vaporize the gum tissue, while leaving the tooth behind it unaffected. The difference in density ensures only the gum tissue will be affected by the energy delivered by the laser.

What Are The Risks Of Laser Gum Contouring

When comparing laser gum contouring and the traditional surgical method, there is very little risk involved with the laser procedure. Compare this to the bleeding and vastly higher risk of infection involved with scalpel contouring. The laser energy provides a precise cut, cauterizes the tissue instantly to minimize bleeding, and makes the procedure relatively simple.
