Patients in Los Angeles assumed they had to choose between two very different kinds of dentist. On one hand, a cosmetic specialist focused on the perfect smile. On the other, the biological dentist focused on whole-body health, biocompatible materials, and minimally invasive care. Most believed these two approaches were philosophically opposed.
That assumption is no longer accurate.
Modern cosmetic dentistry and holistic dentistry have converged around the same core principles: preserve natural tooth structure, use biocompatible materials, address underlying health before aesthetics, and treat the mouth as part of the whole body. At Perfect White Smile in Beverly Hills, Dr. David Frey integrates these principles into elite cosmetic outcomes for patients seeking both a beautiful smile and a healthier approach to achieving it.
This guide explains what holistic cosmetic dentistry is, how it differs from conventional cosmetic work, and why the distinction matters for long-term oral health.
What Is Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry?
Holistic cosmetic dentistry is an integrated approach that combines aesthetic dental treatments such as veneers, bonding, and teeth whitening with the biological and minimally invasive principles of holistic dentistry. The goal is to deliver beautiful cosmetic results while preserving natural tooth structure, using non-toxic materials, and supporting overall health.
To understand the discipline fully, it helps to understand each field independently.
What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of teeth, gums, and the overall smile. Common cosmetic dental procedures include porcelain veneers, composite bonding, professional teeth whitening, smile makeovers, gum contouring, Invisalign and clear aligner therapy, and full-smile reconstruction.
Cosmetic dentistry is not formally recognized by the American Dental Association as a specialty, but accomplished cosmetic dentists pursue extensive postgraduate training through institutions such as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Las Vegas Institute, the Kois Center, and Spear Education.
What Is Holistic Dentistry?
Holistic dentistry, also known as biological dentistry or integrative dentistry, treats the mouth as a fully integrated part of the body and emphasizes biocompatibility, minimally invasive intervention, and the oral-systemic health connection. Holistic dentists generally practice in accordance with guidelines from organizations such as the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM).
Core holistic dentistry principles include:
- Biocompatible material selection, including the avoidance of dental amalgam (mercury fillings)
- Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART protocol) when removing existing amalgam
- Conservative preparation that preserves as much natural tooth structure as possible
- Recognition of the oral-systemic link between oral health and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pregnancy outcomes
- Airway-centered evaluation, including assessment of breathing, sleep, and craniofacial development
- Use of ozone therapy, hydroxyapatite remineralization, and other minimally invasive modalities where evidence supports them
Where the Two Disciplines Meet
Holistic cosmetic dentistry exists at the intersection of these two fields. It is not a watered-down version of either. Instead, it is the deliberate practice of cosmetic dentistry under biological and minimally invasive standards, producing outcomes that look exceptional and support long-term health.
The Convergence Between Cosmetic and Holistic Dentistry
A generation ago, cosmetic dentistry and holistic dentistry sat at opposite ends of the philosophical spectrum. That tension has eased as three forces have brought them together.
1. Materials Science Caught Up
The cosmetic world abandoned porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns because all-ceramic restorations such as lithium disilicate (E.max) and zirconia produce vastly superior aesthetics. The holistic world abandoned the same materials for biocompatibility reasons. Both ended up using identical modern ceramics, just for different reasons.
The same is true for composite resins. Modern nano-hybrid and bioactive composites bond conservatively, look natural, and avoid the mercury content of amalgam. Cosmetic dentists adopted them for shade matching. Holistic dentists adopted them for non-toxicity. The goal is restoration.
2. Minimally Invasive Dentistry Became the Standard of Care
For decades, conventional cosmetic dentistry required aggressive tooth reduction to place porcelain veneers. Today, leading cosmetic protocols emphasize tissue preservation. No-prep and minimal-prep veneers, additive composite bonding, and edge bonding all preserve the natural enamel that gives teeth their long-term resilience.
This matches the holistic principle of minimally invasive dentistry. The cosmetic dentist preserves enamel for optical reasons. The biological dentist preserves it because natural tooth structure is irreplaceable.
3. The Airway Revolution Changed Smile Design
A growing body of research has connected facial aesthetics, dental crowding, and smile width to airway development, tongue posture, and breathing patterns. A narrow smile, recessed chin, or crowded arch is often the visible result of underlying airway dysfunction that began in childhood.
This means that patients who want a more attractive smile may need airway evaluation, palatal expansion, or myofunctional therapy as part of their cosmetic plan. Cosmetic dentists are trained to recognize these patterns, as holistic dentists have been emphasizing them for years.
How Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry Differs From Conventional Cosmetic Dentistry
Although the convergence is real, important distinctions remain. A holistic cosmetic dentist makes specific choices that a conventional cosmetic dentist may not.
Material Selection
Holistic cosmetic dentistry prioritizes biocompatibility alongside aesthetics. This means:
- All-ceramic restorations such as lithium disilicate or zirconia, never porcelain-fused-to-metal
- Mercury-free composite restorations, often using bioactive or BPA-free formulations
- Ceramic (zirconia) implants as an alternative to titanium for patients who prefer or require metal-free options
- Avoidance of nickel-containing alloys in orthodontic appliances when possible
For patients with auto-immune conditions, multiple chemical sensitivities, or strong preferences for metal-free care, biocompatibility testing such as serum compatibility panels may be discussed before extensive restorative work.
Tooth Preservation Philosophy
A conventional cosmetic case might involve preparing eight to 10 teeth for full-coverage veneers when a patient asks for a smile makeover. A holistic cosmetic approach first asks whether the same aesthetic result can be achieved with fewer veneers, additive bonding, orthodontic alignment, or whitening alone.
The principle is straightforward: do the least irreversible work necessary to achieve the desired outcome. This protects the long-term health of the teeth and reduces the lifetime burden of replacement restorations.
Treatment Sequencing
Holistic cosmetic dentistry relies on resolving underlying issues before aesthetic work begins. This includes:
- Active periodontal disease and gingival inflammation
- Untreated decay
- Occlusal dysfunction and signs of clenching or grinding
- Airway and breathing issues
- TMJ dysfunction
Cosmetic restorations placed over unresolved problems can fail prematurely. Veneers fracture under uncontrolled clenching. Crowns fail when occlusion is unstable. Esthetic outcomes deteriorate when underlying inflammation is not addressed.
Whitening Approach
Conventional teeth whitening relies on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide at high concentrations. These treatments are effective and generally safe, but some holistic practices favor lower-concentration tray systems, hydroxyapatite-based brightening, and aggressive treatment of extrinsic staining before any chemical whitening is considered. The goal is to achieve aesthetic results with minimal disruption to the oral microbiome.
Safe Removal of Existing Restorations
When old amalgam (mercury) fillings need to be removed before cosmetic work, holistic cosmetic dentists follow the SMART protocol established by the IAOMT. This includes rubber dam isolation, high-volume evacuation, supplemental air supply, sectioning rather than drilling out the amalgam, and proper waste capture. The goal is to minimize exposure to mercury vapor for both the patient and staff.
Common Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
The following procedures form the core of a modern holistic cosmetic practice in Beverly Hills.
Biocompatible Porcelain Veneers
Modern veneers made from lithium disilicate or feldspathic porcelain are bonded to minimally prepared enamel using biocompatible adhesives. When preparation is conservative and bonding is performed correctly, these restorations can last up to 20 years or longer while preserving the underlying tooth.
Mercury-Free Composite Bonding
Composite bonding uses tooth-colored resin to reshape, lengthen, or repair teeth without removing significant tooth structure. Bonding is fully reversible and ideal for patients who want cosmetic improvement with the lowest possible biological cost.
Metal-Free Crowns and Restorations
All-ceramic crowns made from zirconia or lithium disilicate replace older PFM crowns that contained metal substructures. Modern ceramics are stronger, more aesthetic, and avoid potential sensitivities associated with metal.
Ceramic (Zirconia) Dental Implants
For patients who prefer metal-free implants, or have known sensitivities to titanium, zirconia implants provide a one-piece or two-piece ceramic alternative with strong osseointegration data. Zirconia implants are an established option in biological dentistry and are increasingly accepted in mainstream cosmetic practice.
Hydroxyapatite Remineralization
Nano-hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate compound that mirrors the natural mineral structure of enamel. It can be applied professionally and used in daily home care to support remineralization, reduce sensitivity, and brighten teeth. Many holistic cosmetic patients use hydroxyapatite toothpaste in place of, or alongside, fluoride-based products.
Ozone Therapy
Medical-grade ozone is used in some holistic practices to disinfect cavity preparations, treat early carious lesions, and support healing in periodontal pockets. Ozone has growing clinical support in conservative cariology and is well suited to a minimally invasive cosmetic workflow.
Smile Design Aligned With Airway and Function
A holistic cosmetic plan considers smile width, arch form, and tongue posture as part of the design process. In some cases, palatal expansion or orthodontic alignment is recommended before veneers or bonding, so the final smile supports rather than compromises airway function.
Who Should Consider Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry in Beverly Hills?
Holistic cosmetic dentistry is a strong fit for patients who:
- Want premium cosmetic results but are uncomfortable with metal restorations or amalgam
- Have autoimmune conditions, environmental sensitivities, or known material allergies
- Prefer the most conservative possible preparation of their natural teeth
- Are health-conscious and want their dental care to align with how they approach the rest of their wellness
- Need existing amalgam or PFM restorations replaced with modern, biocompatible alternatives
- Have experienced veneer or crown failures and want a more thorough underlying evaluation
- Want their smile design to consider airway, breathing, and long-term function
Patients who are looking for a quick cosmetic fix without regard for materials or biological considerations may not need a holistic cosmetic approach.
What to Expect at a Holistic Cosmetic Consultation
A holistic cosmetic consultation in Beverly Hills typically goes deeper than a standard cosmetic visit. Expect the following elements:
Comprehensive health history. A holistic cosmetic dentist asks about systemic health, medications, autoimmune conditions, sleep quality, and any history of material sensitivities.
Full clinical examination. This includes evaluation of existing restorations, occlusion, periodontal health, TMJ function, and signs of bruxism or airway dysfunction.
Smile analysis. Photographs, digital scans, and sometimes 3D imaging are used to plan the smile in detail, taking into account facial proportions, lip dynamics, and arch form.
Material discussion. The dentist explains what biocompatible options are appropriate for the proposed treatment and why.
Sequencing plan. Any underlying issues such as inflammation, occlusal dysfunction, or airway concerns are addressed first, with cosmetic work scheduled afterward.
Preview and consent. Many holistic cosmetic practices use mockups, wax-ups, or temporary trial smiles so the patient can preview the result before any work is performed.
Why Beverly Hills Patients Are Choosing Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry
Beverly Hills, and the wider Los Angeles area, have set the standard for cosmetic dentistry. The shift in recent years is the expectation that elite aesthetic results should also align with how patients approach their broader health. Patients who buy organic food, work with integrative physicians, and prioritize wellness do not want their dental care to operate on a different philosophy.
Holistic cosmetic dentistry meets that expectation without compromising on the visual quality Beverly Hills is known for. A smile makeover can use lithium disilicate veneers, conservative preparation, and biocompatible bonding agents and still produce a result indistinguishable from any high-end cosmetic outcome. The difference is in what the patient is not exposed to and how much natural tooth structure is preserved.
Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry at Perfect White Smile
Dr. David Frey has practiced cosmetic dentistry in Beverly Hills for more than two decades, and his clinical philosophy reflects the convergence described in this guide.
Treatment plans at Perfect White Smile prioritize:
- Conservative preparation that protects natural tooth structure
- All-ceramic, metal-free restorations
- Detailed evaluation of occlusion, function, and smile design before any aesthetic work begins
- Modern bonding techniques and biocompatible materials
- Sequencing that resolves underlying issues before cosmetic treatment
Patients who want elite cosmetic results delivered with the principles of biological and minimally invasive dentistry will find that combination in Beverly Hills at Perfect White Smile.
Common Questions Regarding Holistic Cosmetic Dentistry
Is holistic cosmetic dentistry the same as biological cosmetic dentistry?
Yes. The terms holistic dentistry and biological dentistry are used interchangeably. Holistic cosmetic dentistry and biological cosmetic dentistry refer to the same integrated approach combining aesthetic dental treatments with biocompatible, minimally invasive principles.
Are porcelain veneers considered holistic?
Porcelain veneers can absolutely be part of a holistic cosmetic plan when they are made from biocompatible materials such as lithium disilicate or feldspathic porcelain, prepared minimally to preserve enamel, and bonded with non-toxic adhesives.
Do holistic cosmetic dentists offer teeth whitening?
Yes. Most holistic cosmetic practices offer professional whitening but may favor lower-concentration peroxide systems, hydroxyapatite-based brightening, and treatment of extrinsic staining before chemical whitening. The goal is effective whitening with minimal disruption to enamel.
Is fluoride used in holistic cosmetic dentistry?
Some holistic cosmetic dentists use fluoride selectively. Others use nano-hydroxyapatite as a primary remineralizing agent. Patients who prefer fluoride-free care should confirm the practice’s approach during their consultation.
How is holistic cosmetic dentistry different from regular cosmetic dentistry?
Holistic cosmetic dentistry uses the same procedures as conventional cosmetic dentistry but applies stricter standards on material biocompatibility, preservation of natural tooth structure, treatment sequencing, and consideration of overall and airway health. The visual result can be equivalent while biological choices are different.
Are zirconia implants as reliable as titanium implants?
Modern zirconia implants have strong clinical data supporting their osseointegration and long-term success when placed by experienced clinicians. Titanium remains the most extensively studied implant material, but zirconia is a well-established alternative for patients seeking metal-free options.
Does insurance cover holistic cosmetic dentistry?
Insurance coverage depends on the procedure, not on whether it is performed under holistic principles. Cosmetic procedures such as veneers and elective whitening are typically not covered. Restorative procedures using biocompatible materials are generally covered at the same level as conventional restorations.
How do I find a qualified holistic cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills?
Look for cosmetic credentials such as accreditation or fellowship with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, postgraduate training at recognized institutions such as the Kois Center or LVI, and a clinical philosophy that emphasizes conservative preparation, biocompatible materials, and comprehensive evaluation. Membership in holistic dental organizations such as the IAOMT or IABDM is a positive indicator, but is not the only marker of a qualified practitioner.

If you have small teeth, visible gaps or uneven edges that make your smile feel out of balance you are not alone. Many patients across Beverly Hills and Los Angeles come in with healthy teeth but still feel self conscious about how their smile looks in photos, conversations and everyday life. These are often subtle cosmetic concerns but they can have a significant impact on confidence.
Modern cosmetic dentistry allows us to refine these details in a way that looks natural and personalized. Veneers are one of the most effective solutions when the goal is to improve proportions, close spaces and create a more harmonious smile without overdoing it.
Watch this real smile makeover using veneers in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles
This short video highlights a real transformation where a patient with small teeth and noticeable gaps achieved a confident natural looking smile in a very short amount of time. The case reflects what we often see in practice. Teeth that are healthy but not proportionate can create spacing and uneven edges that affect the overall appearance of the smile.
In the video you will notice how quickly the transformation happens and how natural the final result looks. The goal is not to create a generic smile but to enhance what is already there in a way that feels authentic.
Cosmetic dentistry in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles for small teeth gaps and uneven edges without an artificial look
In this case the patient had small teeth that created visible spacing between them. The edges were slightly uneven and had a pointed appearance which made the smile feel less balanced.
These types of concerns are very common. Even minor inconsistencies in size shape and spacing can interrupt the flow of a smile. What matters is not just fixing the issue but doing it in a way that preserves natural character.
The focus here was refinement. The intention was to enhance the smile without making it look obvious that dental work had been done.
How veneers can transform confidence in just two visits for patients in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles
One of the most powerful takeaways from the video is how quickly a transformation like this can happen. In many cases veneer treatment can be completed in as little as two visits with a total treatment time of about ninety minutes of chair time.
The process is efficient but still highly customized. Each veneer is designed to fit the patient’s facial features smile line and natural tooth structure.
Beyond the physical transformation there is a noticeable shift in confidence. Patients often feel more comfortable smiling speaking and socializing. Something as simple as closing gaps and refining edges can change how someone presents themselves in everyday life.
The smile design approach used by cosmetic dentists in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles for natural veneer results
Every veneer case begins with a detailed design process that ensures the final result looks balanced and natural.
Facial and smile analysis for natural looking veneers in Beverly Hills
We evaluate how the teeth relate to the face lips and overall expression. The goal is to create a smile that fits the individual rather than overpowering their features.
Improving proportions for small teeth cases in Los Angeles cosmetic dentistry
Teeth that appear small are carefully adjusted in width and length to create better balance. This helps the smile look fuller and more proportionate.
Closing gaps with veneers instead of braces in Beverly Hills cosmetic cases
In select situations veneers can close spaces conservatively. The shaping is done in a way that maintains natural contours and avoids a bulky look.
Refining uneven or spiked edges for a smoother smile in Los Angeles
Edges are softened and aligned to create a more cohesive and youthful appearance.
Choosing natural shade and translucency for veneers in Beverly Hills
The right shade is critical. Veneers should look bright but still natural with subtle translucency that mimics real enamel.
Why veneers are a leading cosmetic dentistry solution in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles for smile enhancement
Porcelain veneers allow for precise control over size, shape and color. They are ideal for patients who want to improve multiple aspects of their smile at once.
In cases like this, veneers can make small teeth appear more proportionate, close gaps seamlessly and create smoother edges all within a single treatment plan.
When done correctly veneers should never look obvious. They should look like your natural smile at its best.
Real results from veneers in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles that go beyond aesthetics
The final result in this case created a more balanced and harmonious smile. The teeth looked proportionate the gaps were closed and the edges were smooth and natural.
What truly stands out is the impact on confidence. Patients often describe feeling more comfortable in social settings more willing to smile in photos and less focused on hiding their teeth.
That kind of change goes beyond cosmetic improvement. It affects how people show up in their daily lives.
Who is a good candidate for veneers in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles for small teeth gaps and uneven smiles
You may be a candidate for veneers if you have small or undersized teeth, visible gaps, uneven or chipped edges or overall concerns about symmetry and proportion. Veneers are especially helpful when you want cosmetic improvement without orthodontic treatment.
A consultation is the best way to determine if veneers are the right solution for your specific goals.

Discover How Advanced TMJ and Bite Reconstruction Can Restore Comfort, Function, and Beauty
When most people think about improving their smile, they imagine straightening teeth or whitening enamel. But for many patients, the real issue lies deeper, in the jaw alignment and bite structure. At Perfect White Smile, Dr. David Frey specializes in advanced TMJ treatment, bite reconstruction, and vertical dimension dentistry, helping patients rediscover comfort and confidence without the need for invasive jaw surgery.
Understanding TMJ Disorders and Bite Collapse
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull and plays a critical role in speaking, chewing, and overall facial harmony. When this joint becomes misaligned, often due to bite collapse or an incorrect vertical dimension, it can lead to chronic symptoms such as TMJ pain, headaches, jaw tension, clicking sounds, tooth wear, and facial imbalance. These issues can make everyday life uncomfortable and affect both confidence and function.
How Dr. David Frey Restores the Perfect Bite Without Surgery
In the featured video below, Dr. Frey demonstrates a complex case involving a patient with a severely collapsed bite and limited space for proper closure. Instead of using surgical intervention, he applies a neuromuscular and physiologic dentistry approach to identify the patient’s ideal jaw position. Once the optimal vertical dimension of occlusion is determined, the treatment involves three key steps. First, the bite is safely opened to restore natural height and comfort. Second, stabilization is achieved as muscles and joints adapt to the corrected position. Third, the bite is carefully reconstructed with precise restorations to balance function and aesthetics. The result is a balanced facial profile, comfortable jaw movement, and a naturally beautiful smile.
Why This Approach Goes Beyond Traditional Cosmetic Dentistry
While traditional cosmetic dentistry focuses on the appearance of teeth, physiologic dentistry emphasizes the harmony between the teeth, jaw joints, and muscles. At Perfect White Smile, the goal is long-term health, not just short-term beauty. Dr. Frey’s holistic approach addresses TMJ relief, bite correction, jaw alignment, facial balance, and sustainable long-term cosmetic results. Patients who have been told their cases are too complicated often find lasting solutions with this method, without the need for surgery.
Real Transformation, Real Comfort
By restoring the correct bite and vertical dimension, patients often experience improved comfort, better posture, and enhanced facial appearance. Many report fewer headaches, reduced jaw pain, and a more youthful look, proving that true dental health is about both form and function.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is vertical dimension dentistry?
Vertical dimension dentistry focuses on restoring the natural height between the upper and lower jaws to ensure a functional and balanced bite. This process helps alleviate TMJ pain and enhances facial symmetry.
2. Can TMJ disorders be treated without surgery?
Yes. In many cases, non-surgical neuromuscular dentistry techniques, like those used by Dr. Frey, can realign the jaw and relieve TMJ discomfort effectively.
3. What causes bite collapse?
Bite collapse often results from tooth wear, missing teeth, or poorly fitted dental restorations that alter the natural alignment of the jaw.
4. How long does full-mouth reconstruction take?
Treatment timelines vary depending on the case, but most bite reconstruction procedures take several months. This allows time for stabilization and ensures precision in achieving a balanced bite.
5. Is this treatment only cosmetic?
No. While the results are aesthetically pleasing, the primary purpose of this treatment is functional. It improves comfort, jaw alignment, posture, and long-term oral stability.

What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of your teeth, gums, and overall smile while maintaining proper oral function. At its best, it blends artistry with advanced dental science to create a smile that looks natural, healthy, and confident. In Beverly Hills, where aesthetics and self-expression are celebrated, cosmetic dentistry has become an essential part of comprehensive dental care.
At Perfect White Smile, patients discover that cosmetic dentistry is not just about beauty—it is about balance, comfort, and long-term health. Dr. David Frey , a 35 year veteran of Beverly Hills cosmetic dentistry, leads a practice known for precision and beauty. His team takes time to understand each patient’s goals, whether they are seeking a smile makeover in Beverly Hills, gum contouring, or dental implants that restore both confidence and function.
Aesthetic dentistry in Beverly Hills often begins with an understanding of how oral health and jaw alignment affect facial appearance. Conditions like TMJ disorders can influence not only comfort but also how your smile looks and feels. That is why every treatment plan at Perfect White Smile begins with a detailed evaluation of both cosmetic and functional factors—to ensure results that look beautiful and last for years.
What Is Cosmetic Dentistry and Who Needs It?
Cosmetic dentistry focuses on enhancing the look of your smile, while general dentistry emphasizes prevention and maintenance. The two often work hand in hand, since healthy teeth and gums are essential to creating and sustaining a beautiful smile. Patients turn to cosmetic dentists in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills when they want to improve issues such as discoloration, misalignment, chipped teeth, and bite issues.
Aesthetic dentistry in Beverly Hills is about more than vanity. It’s about restoring balance and harmony to your facial features. The way your gums frame your teeth, the alignment of your bite, and the brightness of your enamel all play key roles in your overall appearance. Some patients seek subtle refinement; others desire a full smile makeover in Beverly Hills that transforms how they look and feel every day.
Common concerns include:
- TMJ Treatment Jaw Pain
- Discolored or receding gums
- Crowded or gappy teeth
- Teeth worn from grinding or clenching
- Overbite and underbite issues
In Beverly Hills, where presentation often matters, patients understand that a confident smile can enhance both personal and professional interaction. Dr. David Frey’s patients often say their new smile changed how they feel about themselves. One patient shared, “I used to hide my smile in photos. After my treatment here, I can’t stop smiling.”
The Role of TMJ in Cosmetic Dentistry
TMJ—the branch of dentistry that can involve headaches and neck pain along with clenching and bruxing—plays a central role in cosmetic outcomes. A healthy jaw joint in the corrective bite position will make for a better attractive smile. Even the most skillfully crafted veneers or crowns rely on a balanced jaw position which allows your facial muscles to relax and makes your smile looks super beautiful!
As a Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist and TMJ dentist, Dr. David Frey combines these disciplines seamlessly. He evaluates the entire smile and jaw support before recommending treatment. His expertise in aesthetic tmj dentistry allows him to enhance both appearance and stability, ensuring that your cosmetic improvements are backed by solid, lasting health.
Common Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures in Beverly Hills
Modern cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of techniques to enhance your smile with minimal discomfort and predictable results. At Perfect White Smile, advanced technologies such as laser therapy, CAD/CAM imaging, and digital radiography ensure precision and comfort for every patient.
Gum Lasering for Aesthetic Enhancement
Gum lasering is a precise procedure that adjusts the gum line to expose more of the natural tooth. It is often recommended for patients who feel their smile looks “too gummy.” By reshaping both gum and bone tissue with refined, minimally invasive instruments, Dr. Davide Frey can reveal ideal tooth proportions and create a more harmonious smile.
Patients frequently ask, “How long does gum lasering take?” The procedure typically lasts about 5 to ten minutes, depending on the number of teeth involved. With laser-assisted techniques and gentle sedation, recovery is generally comfortable, and most patients return to normal routines the same day. The results are immediate—your smile looks balanced, proportionate, and radiant.
TMJ Disorders and Cosmetic Dentistry: An Important Connection
Can TMJ affect your smile?
Yes. TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, can significantly influence both the appearance and comfort of your smile. The TMJ connects your jawbone to your skull, allowing smooth movement for speaking and chewing. When this joint becomes misaligned or inflamed, it can cause pain, clicking sounds, headaches, and even affect how your teeth come together.
Patients seeking cosmetic dentistry in Beverly Hills often discover that untreated TMJ issues contribute to uneven tooth wear, facial asymmetry, and jaw strain. Over time, this can distort facial balance and impact aesthetic results. That is why Dr. David Frey at Perfect White Smile integrates TMJ treatment in Beverly Hills into his cosmetic planning process.
Signs of TMJ disorders include:
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Difficulty chewing
- Headaches or neck pain
- Uneven bite or facial imbalance
By addressing these concerns before performing aesthetic treatments, Dr. David Frey ensures long-term comfort and stability. Cosmetic dentistry should never compromise function. Proper alignment allows dental restorations to last longer and ensures that your new smile looks and feels natural.
If you’re concerned about how TMJ might be affecting your smile, or you’re ready to explore cosmetic dentistry options, schedule a consultation with Dr. David Frey at Perfect White Smile!
Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist in Beverly Hills
Selecting a provider for your smile transformation is an important decision. Beverly Hills offers no shortage of cosmetic dentists, but not all bring the same expertise or patient focus. The ideal choice combines technical mastery, artistic vision, and compassion.
Credentials and Specialization Matter
Many patients wonder, “What’s the difference between a cosmetic dentist and a general dentist?” A cosmetic dentist is a general dentist that also focuses on the appearance of teeth, while a general dentist is a regular dentist that does all types of dentistry from periodontics to orthodontics. When cosmetic concerns involve implant placement, a periodontist brings specialized knowledge that general dentists may not have.

What Is Full Mouth Reconstruction with Crowns?
Full mouth reconstruction with crowns is a comprehensive restorative dental procedure that involves rebuilding or restoring all the teeth in both the upper and lower jaws. It is not the same as a simple cosmetic makeover; it’s a medical and aesthetic restoration designed to improve bite alignment, oral health, and overall facial balance.
During reconstruction, porcelain or ceramic crowns are custom-designed to cover damaged or worn teeth. These crowns replicate the natural look of your enamel while strengthening your bite and protecting your teeth from further damage.
Common reasons you might consider this treatment:
- Severely worn-down teeth due to grinding (bruxism)
- Multiple broken, fractured, or missing teeth
- Chronic jaw pain or headaches caused by bite misalignment
- Long-term damage from decay or acid erosion
Why Choose Crowns for Full Mouth Reconstruction?
When it comes to rebuilding a damaged or worn smile, dental crowns play a vital role in both function and appearance. Unlike veneers, which cover only the front surface, crowns completely encase each tooth, providing full protection from every angle. This 360-degree coverage strengthens weakened teeth, restores your natural bite, and recreates the look of a perfectly aligned, youthful smile.
Crowns are designed using advanced digital imaging and precision color matching, ensuring that your final results are not only durable but indistinguishable from natural enamel. Whether you’re addressing extensive decay, fractures, or bite problems, crowns deliver both beauty and long-lasting strength.
Key benefits of full mouth reconstruction with crowns:
- Restored Function: Crowns bring back your ability to chew, bite, and speak comfortably. You’ll rediscover the freedom to enjoy your favorite foods without discomfort or hesitation.
- Uniform, Aesthetic Appearance: Every crown is crafted to harmonize with your facial symmetry, tooth shade, and gum line, creating a cohesive, natural-looking smile.
- Durability and Longevity: With proper care, porcelain, zirconia, or E-max crowns can last 10–20 years or even longer. They resist cracks, wear, and discoloration far better than natural enamel.
- Complete Protection: Crowns act as strong shields, covering damaged or root-treated teeth to prevent further decay, breakage, or sensitivity.
At Perfect White Smiles, we combine digital artistry with scientific precision. Our team ensures each crown is sculpted to perfection, with careful adjustments to your bite and smile line. The result is a beautifully balanced, functional, and confident smile that feels as natural as it looks.
Understanding the Biomaterial Science of Dental Crowns
Each material, zirconia, porcelain, and E-max, offers distinct advantages.
- Zirconia Crowns: Exceptionally strong and fracture-resistant, ideal for molars or patients who grind their teeth. Modern translucent zirconia provides both durability and natural appearance.
- Porcelain Crowns: Highly aesthetic and lifelike, perfect for front teeth restorations. Though slightly less durable than zirconia, they offer unmatched enamel-like translucency.
- E-max Crowns: Made from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, combining strength with superior shine. Excellent for both front and back teeth, delivering a radiant, natural smile.
At Perfect White Smiles, we choose the right crown material to balance beauty, comfort, and long-term performance for every patient.
Comparison Table of Crown Materials
| Crown Material | Durability | Aesthetics | Cost | Ideal Use Cases |
| Zirconia | Extremely high; resists fractures and wear | Good, with modern translucent variants offering a natural look | Moderate to high | Best for molars, patients with bruxism, or those needing strong bite support |
| Porcelain | Moderate; can chip under heavy pressure | Excellent; offers the most enamel-like translucency | Moderate | Ideal for front teeth restorations where appearance is the priority |
| E-max (Lithium Disilicate) | High; strong yet less rigid than zirconia | Outstanding; highly lifelike shine and clarity | High | Suitable for both front and back teeth, especially for patients seeking a natural, radiant smile |
Step-by-Step Process of Full Mouth Reconstruction
- Consultation and Smile Analysis: During your first visit, we assess your teeth, gums, bite, and facial symmetry using advanced imaging and digital scans. We listen to your concerns, whether they’re functional, cosmetic, or both.
- Treatment Planning: Based on your needs, we create a customized plan that may include crowns, implants, or other complementary procedures. You’ll see a digital preview of your expected results before we even begin.
- Tooth Preparation and Temporary Crowns: We gently prepare your teeth and fit temporary crowns to protect your smile as your permanent ones are crafted in our lab.
- Final Crown Placement: Once your permanent crowns are ready, we precisely bond them to each tooth and fine-tune your bite to perfection.
This process typically takes several visits but delivers a permanent, life-changing transformation.
Is Full Mouth Reconstruction Painful?
This is one of the most common questions new patients ask, and the answer is reassuring. Thanks to modern sedation and digital dentistry, the procedure is comfortable and minimally invasive. Any post-procedure sensitivity is temporary and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How Long Does Full Mouth Reconstruction Last?
With meticulous home care and regular dental visits, your restorations can last 15–20 years or longer. The materials we use at Perfect White Smiles are of the highest dental-grade ceramics designed for longevity and strength.
The Emotional Impact: Confidence Beyond the Smile
Many of our patients describe their experience as transformative, not just physically but emotionally. Restoring your teeth with full mouth reconstruction with crowns can:
- Enhance facial support, reducing sagging or sunken cheeks.
- Make you look younger and more vibrant.
- Improve self-esteem and comfort in social or professional settings.
When you speak, laugh, or eat, your confidence radiates through. That’s the deeper purpose of restorative dentistry.
Aftercare Tips for Your Reconstructed Smile
Your full mouth reconstruction with crowns is a long-term investment in both health and confidence. With proper care, your restored smile can remain flawless for decades. Here are some essential aftercare practices:
- Practice Gentle Yet Thorough Oral Hygiene: Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Use floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque around the crown edges.
- Regular Dental Visits: Schedule check-ups every six months so your dentist can assess the crowns and your bite alignment. Early adjustments prevent long-term wear.
- Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: Ice chewing, overly sticky candies, and hard nuts can stress dental restorations. Be mindful of habits that create undue pressure.
- Wear a Night Guard if You Grind: Patients with bruxism should use custom night guards to protect crowns from grinding damage.
- Maintain a Healthy Diet: Foods high in calcium and Vitamin D strengthen adjoining natural teeth and gums, helping preserve the longevity of your crowns.
- Avoid Staining Habits: Limit tobacco, coffee, and wine consumption to maintain the natural color and shine of your reconstruction.
Proper care ensures your crowns remain just as stunning and strong as the day they were placed.

Do you understand “What Is the Difference Between a Dentist and a Cosmetic Dentist?” The dental field offers various specialties, focusing not only on oral health but also on enhancing smiles. While orthodontists concentrate on teeth straightening and restoration experts handle tooth replacements, the differences between dentists and cosmetic dentists can be unclear.
In terms of education, both cosmetic dentists and general dentists hold the same dentistry degree, enabling them to practice and offer services within their state. Does this mean cosmetic dentists are identical to general dentists, and can any dentist claim to be a cosmetic dentist? The answer is both yes and no.
The Training:
Cosmetic dentists receive extensive training in various procedures, focusing on enhancing the smile’s aesthetics. While general dentists handle basic services like fillings and root canals, cosmetic dentists aim to make procedures visually appealing while ensuring oral health. They meticulously blend even unseen elements like posterior crowns with surrounding teeth.
General dentists often complete minimal post-school education, while cosmetic dentists pursue advanced certifications and attend specialized training programs. For example, becoming a preferred Invisalign provider requires additional certification. This commitment to ongoing education distinguishes cosmetic dentists, enabling them to offer comprehensive cosmetic dental services.
Experience:
Both dentists perform various procedures, but a cosmetic dentist specializes in treatments like veneers, gaining extensive experience in the process. While a general dentist may offer some cosmetic services, consulting a cosmetic dentist ensures superior results. The distinction lies in the cosmetic dentist’s frequent practice, deep experience, and ongoing education, setting them apart in their field.
Services Offered by General Dentists
Your regular bi-annual exams and cleanings are usually conducted by your general or family dentist. While cosmetic dentists may also perform these procedures, their focus is more on appearance and function rather than preventive care. General dentists commonly provide the following services:
- Dentures
- Cleanings, exams, and x-rays
- Fillings
- Root canals
- Extractions
- Treatments for gum disease
Services Offered by a Cosmetic Dentist
The services provided by a cosmetic dentist vary depending on the practitioner’s specialization. However, there are common procedures that most cosmetic dentists offer to enhance patient care. These may include:
- Teeth whitening
- Teeth bonding
- Veneers
- Porcelain crowns
- Total smile makeovers
Is There a Price Difference?
Cosmetic dentists often engage in more seminars and training post-dental school to stay updated with the latest advancements in the field. Their primary aim is to provide patients with beautiful, healthier smiles. However, this additional training comes at a cost to patients. Cosmetic dentistry services typically have a higher price tag compared to those offered by general dentists. This is mainly due to the increased time spent by the dentist with each patient and the complexity of the procedures involved.
Choosing Your Dentist
Deciding on a dentist depends on your needs. Do you need emergency care or want a brighter smile? While both cosmetic and general dentists can help, they specialize in different areas.
Considering cost and expertise, many prefer cosmetic dentists for smile enhancement and general dentists for routine care.

What is a Prosthodontist?
A prosthodontist recognized by the ADA, like dentists and orthodontists, requires three additional years of university education. While any dentist can claim to be a cosmetic dentist with some extra training, this isn’t the case for prosthodontists.
The American Dental Association defines prosthodontists as specialists in diagnosing, planning treatment, and maintaining oral function, appearance, and health, especially for patients with missing or deficient teeth and oral tissues. Prosthodontists focus mainly on restoring missing teeth and related issues.
They undergo extensive training in general dentistry and cosmetics, specializing in dental restorations like implants. While cosmetic and general dentists can also perform these procedures, prosthodontists have more education and training.
Prosthodontists also handle specialized services like dental bridges, dentures (full and partial), implants, and reconstructions.

FAQs
General vs. Cosmetic Dentist: How to Choose?
Choosing between a general dentist and a cosmetic dentist depends on your needs. General dentists handle routine care, while cosmetic dentists specialize in smile-enhancing treatments like whitening and veneers.
What can you expect from prosthodontist benefits?
Prosthodontists focus on restoring teeth and oral tissues, offering expertise in implants, bridges, and dentures for comprehensive dental solutions.
What influences dental procedure cost?
Factors like treatment complexity and materials influence dental procedure costs. While cosmetic services may cost more, they offer unique smile-enhancing benefits.
How often should you go for Regular check-ups?
Try to go for a regular check-up every six months to maintain oral health. Your dentist may suggest more frequent visits based on your specific needs.
A bridal dental makeover means a smile you can be proud of on your wedding day.
Weddings are all about attention to detail. You’ll make important decisions about your dress, jewelry, accessories, shoes, makeup, and hair in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding. Don’t forget about your wedding smile!
You’ll be beaming on your special day, with your smile a focal point of photographs and video that you’ll look back on for years to come.
A smile makeover can give you the confidence you need to smile brightly and broadly in front of the people who matter to you most: your spouse, family, and friends. With a wedding smile makeover, you won’t have to worry about discolored teeth or issues with your gum line.
While aesthetics are a big part of weddings, your health and personal comfort are key considerations in every dental makeover, too. We want your smile to look incredible, feel comfortable, and be as healthy as possible.
Bridal Dental Makeovers: A Perfect Smile Designed for You
Your wedding dental makeover is all about giving you the best smile possible.
That definitely includes some cosmetic dentistry work. Depending on your personal needs, that could include basic teeth whitening and cleaning, porcelain veneers, and much more.
Your oral health is a top priority for Dr. David Frey and everyone at Perfect White Smile. We’ll create a treatment plan in advance of your makeover to address any oral health issues, like damaged teeth. That helps your smile become not only as beautiful as possible, but sustainable as well.
Our Smile 360 program brings together cosmetic and restorative dental procedures for full mouth reconstruction. Let’s take a closer look at a few key dental services involved in this restorative and rejuvenating process that you might select as part of your makeover.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a durable, reliable solution to a variety of cosmetic dental problems. Chips, gaps, smiles showing too much gum, and more can be addressed with porcelain veneers.
Veneers alter the appearance of your smile as well as protect the natural teeth underneath. We have cosmetic dentists on staff who have long-term experience in crafting veneers that create the perfect smile, for special occasions like weddings and everyday life.
Teeth Whitening
A teeth whitening, or teeth bleaching, procedure is a cosmetic process that increases the brilliance of your smile while also making color more uniform across all teeth. Many dental makeovers include teeth whitening.
It’s very easy for your teeth to become somewhat dull or discolored over time. If you want a more radiant smile, definitely consider teeth whitening.
Dental Implants
While porcelain veneers fit over your current teeth, dental implants replace missing teeth.
There’s no doubt that implants have a cosmetic aspect to them. They accurately replicate your natural teeth and are almost impossible to distinguish from the rest of your smile.
However, dental implants also play a valuable role in oral health. They help to keep your teeth aligned and in place while replacing soft, easily damaged gum tissue with a durable tooth replacement.
Smile 360
Smile 360 is a comprehensive approach to dentistry that takes oral health and aesthetics into account.
Our team will make sure your teeth are as beautiful as can be for your wedding. At the same time, they can ensure each and every tooth is properly positioned. This can improve your bite, aligning it with the muscles in your head and neck as well as your jaw joint.
With Smile 360, a bridal dental makeover can address issues like pain in the jaw as well as improve appearance. Ultimately, you’ll have a healthier smile, and it won’t cause you discomfort to show it off.
Superior Bridal Dental Makeovers in LA
Our skilled team of dental professionals are dedicated to creating healthy and beautiful smiles. With your bridal dental makeover, you can focus purely on appearance or take a holistic approach that improves both oral health and aesthetics. When you search “bridal dental services near me,” look no further than Dr. David Frey.
It doesn’t take surgery to get a dental makeover. While surgical procedures like dental implants can help your aesthetic dental health, there are a number of less invasive dental procedures to improve your smile.
We’ve compiled a list of 5 of these cosmetic and aesthetic dental procedures, ranging from quick and easy to full teeth makeovers.
Teeth Whitening
If your teeth are straight, and in good condition generally, then whitening may be all you need for a dental makeover. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that can transform a dull smile.
On our website, we explain, “The precise application of an approved peroxide product doesn’t just take your teeth back to their original shade; teeth whitening can lift the radiance of your smile beyond your natural shade. This is significant because many people’s teeth are naturally somewhat off-white due to the thickness of their enamel or other genetic factors.”
Dental Veneers
For those whose teeth are not as healthy, porcelain veneers might be the perfect smile makeover. This procedure is ideal for those who have chipped or cracked teeth, or who have gaps in their smile. Dental veneers can whiten stained teeth, address a gummy smile, solve uneven teeth, and even improve the appearance of crooked teeth.
Healthline says, “Some people may only get one veneer in the case of a broken or chipped tooth, but many get between six to eight veneers in order to create an even, symmetrical smile. The top front eight teeth are the most commonly applied veneers.”
In this procedure, your dentist will start by solving oral health problems, like gum disease or problems with your tooth root. Then they will adhere porcelain veneers directly to your existing teeth.
Some veneers require a fair amount of preparation to remove tooth enamel before the application. Other types of veneers (like the Lumineers that we use at Perfect While Smile) are applied with much less preparation.
Orthodontics
If your teeth are crooked, or if you have severe problems with your bite (which can cause problems with your jaw, such as TMJ), your dentist may recommend orthodontics. Procedures like braces can help straighten teeth and solve the more serious problems of bite alignment.
While orthodontic procedures are generally non-surgical, they are more involved than cosmetic procedures.
Tooth replacement
For those with missing teeth, replacing them can be an excellent dental makeover technique. Depending on which teeth are missing, and how many, options may include bridges or implants.
Implants are considered a surgical solution, so they don’t quite fit on this list. You can learn more about them in our blog. Bridges, on the other hand, are a non-surgical dental procedure that can improve your smile.
A bridge is a false tooth or teeth that are held in your mouth with dental crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap.
Full dental makeover
Perhaps the best solution for an astonishing smile is a full dental makeover. A full smile makeover involves many of the techniques that we’ve discussed above, combined into one full mouth reconstruction. At Perfect White Smile, we call our version of this “Smile 360.”
As we explain on our website, “Getting all your teeth enhanced involves a comprehensive 360 approach that makes sure you have healthy gums, no infections or missing teeth, a healthy bite that is headache and pain-free, and most importantly, a beautiful smile!”
This is a comprehensive approach to cosmetic and aesthetic dental health, and to dental health overall. This procedure is designed to
- replace missing teeth
- repair damaged teeth
- correct improperly aligned jaw joints and bites
- reverse gum disease
- get the jaw joints working properly without clicks and pops
- create the most gorgeous smiles that look relaxed and proportional to your face.
Before undertaking a full dental makeover, your dentist will need to address any underlying dental problems that the patient may have. First, your dentist will handle any necessary
- Root canals
- Gum tissue issues
- Tooth loss
- Orthodontics
- TMJ issues
Then your dentist will tackle the rest of the teeth makeover process, including solutions like dental veneers.
What makes Smile 360 different from the other techniques we’ve discussed is that it is intended to treat your entire mouth. Because your oral health issues are solved while your smile is being corrected and beautified, this is a full dental makeover.
Actress, singer, and style icon Zendaya visits Cosmetic Dentist Dr. David Frey’s Beverly Hills office for a smile consultation and Zoom whitening treatment. She shares with Celebrity Page that the process was fast, easy, and an effective way to instantly brighten her smile. Whitening treatments are mostly pain-free, despite mild sensitivity immediately following the treatment, and we recommend avoiding drinks like coffee that tend to stain and discolor the teeth.
Zendaya is on the show, Shake it Up! playing the role of Rocky Blue. She was also recently in The Greatest Showman with stars Zac Efron and Hugh Jackman. Prior to tv and films, Zendaya started her career as a fashion model for Macy’s, Old Navy, Sears and Mervyn’s.

What Is ZOOM Teeth Whitening?
Philips ZOOM® whitening is a complete tooth whitening system that is safe, effective and fast. Dr. Frey performs ZOOM whitening right in his office with no downtime. ZOOM whitening can brighten teeth by up to eight shades in just 45 minutes with no trays or strips.
During the holidays, you may have seen your fair share of those cute little cut-out cookies; ones made to look like ugly sweaters or reindeer or good old Santa himself. As children, many of us enjoyed the process of using cookie-cutters to create our very own delectables to be intricately decorated. Today, we can drive through neighborhoods in which the homes people live in seem to have come off of a “cookie-cutter” factory line; every other one had matching shapes and colors. Sadly, this practice of creation can even reside in dentistry. But not in our Beverly Hills cosmetic dentistry office. Here, we know that your smile is one-of-a-kind.
The term “smile makeover” is relatively overused at this point in time. We use it because it’s what people know. However, the actual process that is involved in bringing out the best in a person’s face can’t be adequately described in those two little words. Ultimately, a smile makeover is more of a redesign; a custom-designed protocol that is anything but cookie-cutter. Before we ever commence with treatment planning, we have to answer one important question:
What Do You Want Your Face To Look Like?
You see, your smile is a central aspect of your face. Even something as simple as teeth-whitening is going to change the way your face looks – for the better, of course.
Your Smile, Your Way
What is involved in a smile makeover, or redesign, is different for everyone and determined by the conversations we have about what you ultimately want. Some answers may be obvious: “I want straighter teeth.” Some may be more conceptual: “I want my smile to reflect my personality” (the shape of your teeth comes into play here, believe it or not). With the objective in mind, we are then able to create the contours, color, and shapes that are proportionate to the other features of the face to obtain the desired outcome.
Everything from the way your teeth fit together to how the muscles around your mouth sit can beautifully refine your smile, and thus your face. Dr. Frey has the extensive background in neuromuscular dentistry and cosmetic dentistry to create something beautiful, something that reflects who you are.

A healthy smile is a true asset to health and wellness. An attractive smile is, too, actually. When teeth look white and radiant, we feel better. We smile more. When we do this, we attract goodness into our lives. Studies have proven that smiling is a minor physical act that excites the brain to produce more “feel good” chemicals like dopamine. Smiling, especially with bright white teeth, has also demonstrated the power to propel professional and social success.
You are likely aware that there are many pitfalls that can diminish your radiant smile. Here, we offer four tips for preservation.
- Get intentional about oral care. There is a new trend revolving around mindful living, and it can help your smile. To be intentional means to act with purpose. If you set the intention to protect your teeth from unnecessary damage, this encourages daily, purposeful action such as brushing and flossing with your full attention on the task at hand. You might even throw in the occasional home-whitening boost using quality strips or another whitening product.
- Watch how you eat. Usually, we hear that we should watch what we eat. When it comes to tooth discoloration, there is no way to avoid pigmented foods altogether. We won’t even suggest that you try to do this. What we will suggest is that you use a straw when consuming iced tea, coffee, or soda. We will also suggest making a habit of rinsing your mouth with water after you consume food or beverage. Rinsing is better than brushing in this instance because enamel is usually softer after a snack or meal and therefore susceptible to erosion from brushing.
- Turn to Mother Nature for assistance. There are several natural remedies to protect a radiant smile. One that we can stand behind is the consumption of crunchy fruits and vegetables. These foods have a polishing effect that discourages plaque buildup. Also, ending a meal with, say, a stick of celery, dilutes and sweeps away debris that can cause stains.
- Teeth whitening treatment is not a once-and-done process. Most people who undergo teeth whitening once want to do it again. Why? Because a radiant smile is an asset we all love to admire!
Do you want to establish a new baseline of radiance for your smile? Contact us online or call our Beverly Hills office at 310-276-4537 to schedule your treatment. Dr. Frey also offers professional teeth whitening in his office in Marylebone in the UK.
Men and women in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas trust cosmetic dentistry professional Dr. David Frey to help them meet their goals that center on a healthy, attractive smile. Cosmetic dentistry is an exciting field in which the sole purpose is to bring out a person’s natural beauty using meticulous techniques and lifelike materials.
Innovation in cosmetic dentistry has made it possible for dentists to mimic the appearance and the structural integrity of natural teeth using highly durable materials. However, the magic of cosmetic dentistry does not lie only in materials; there is an extensive amount of training that a cosmetic dentist completes making the best use of these materials. Truly, a smile makeover of any degree is a work of artistry and skill.
Procedures For Better Smiles
Cosmetic dentistry is a rather complex practice because every tooth is different. Also, dentists are not dealing only with teeth, but also the jaw, bone structure, facial symmetry, and patient preference. The objective of each case is unique, which is why there is such a wide variety of cosmetic dental treatments available today.
- Teeth whitening goes above and beyond the polishing that one gets from their whitening toothpaste. Patients of our Beverly Hills office may elect to have us whiten their teeth, or to obtain their desired result through professional teeth whitening with a home kit.
- Porcelain veneers. What can’t be done with porcelain veneers? Very little, it would seem. The customized canvas of dental porcelain may be placed to cover a chip, gap, or much more.
- Dental bonding is also a veneer process that may be appropriate for inconsequential repairs, such as a small stain or chip. A cosmetic dentist performs bonding with a clear objective of reinstating the full natural appeal of the tooth and the smile as a whole.
- Lumineers are minimal-prep porcelain veneers that take only two visits to complete a smile makeover. The ultra-thin nature of Lumineers is appealing to individuals who would prefer to preserve tooth enamel.
Not Your Mother’s Dentistry
The way that dental care is conducted today is a far cry from what our parents received. Whether you have a tooth or teeth that need repair or replacement, or your primary objective is to freshen up your smile, you can expect personal, friendly care to be developed around your expectations.

There are many dental problems a person can encounter, but one of the most terrifying, if not the most disappointing, is a crooked smile. People who have crooked teeth could find it difficult to complete simple tasks such as eating, drinking, or even talking. Although there are various reasons as to why someone has a crooked jaw, a lot of individuals tend to overlook the most obvious answer: genetics. Yes, the construction of one’s face and family medical history plays a big part in their dental and oral care. Albeit, the symptoms may differ due to the times, nevertheless these circumstances should not be ignored. Major problems can come from minor tooth inconveniences like the underbite and the overbite.
The Underbite And Overbite Explained
An overbite and an underbite share similar symptoms but what makes them different is the location of the affected area. The underbite is a condition where the lower teeth are blocking the front upper teeth whenever the jaws are closed. Normally, the lower line is supposed to be behind the upper row of teeth. An underbite is mostly a genetic problem (due to the shape of the person’s jaw) but children who are exposed to sucking pacifiers for long periods of time, bad chewing habits, and thumb sucking experience it as well – for the motion of “sucking” encourages the teeth to grow or move outward. It can also be caused by children who have adenoids or allergies because it causes the victim to breathe through her/his mouth.
The overbite, on the other hand, occurs when the upper teeth overlaps with the lower one. In order for your teeth to be classified under this dental problem, it has to exceed the normal measurement of 3-5mm. Of course, it is caused by genetics and the habits of early childhood, but since children are more prone to developing this kind of complication, overbites are known to be the most common malocclusion in this age bracket.
Because of the misaligned construction of the teeth, one’s smile can become crooked or misaligned. The immediate solution is to go visit a cosmetic dentist. With the availability of modern cosmetic dentistry technology today, people with crooked teeth can resolve this concern much faster and through painless methods.
Treating Crooked Teeth With Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentists specialize in giving people that perfect white smile. Although it is popularly known as the go-to option to get that superstar shine, their methods can actually remedy common dental problems like crooked teeth.
People who have seriously crooked teeth will find it difficult to speak and chew their food (even if it is soft). In some extreme cases, they experience:
• Chronic jaw or joint pain (TMJ)
• Headaches and earaches
• Incessant mouth breathing
• Halitosis and bacterial infections
• Wearing of the tooth enamel
• Tooth decay
• Sleep apnea and other nighttime breathing difficulties
Snapping a good set of braces is the usual option for most people, but because of what cosmetic dentistry has to offer, individuals who have crooked teeth don’t need to wait for a long time for visible results and will no longer have to worry about their teeth misaligning again.
Out of all the options of cosmetic dental approaches, reshaping and applying veneers onto the affected areas is the best dental correction choice. It can accommodate all sorts of cases, and the process and finished look is simple and fast. Depending on what the cosmetic dentist is facing, s/he will need to shave a portion of your upper or lower teeth before placing the porcelain veneer over the area. Porcelain veneers are hard, thin shells that can cover up almost every kind of dental imperfection, and at the same time, give your pearly whites that extra strength they need.
Your teeth are special, and even though you have been taught that brushing and flossing will aid you in avoiding various dental issues, there are situations where the benefits of fluoride is not enough to protect you. Cases like under/overbites and similar imperfections cannot be corrected with these methods, and ignoring their early signs will further damage your dental health. With cosmetic dentistry, however, you are able to correct these issues without having to experience long lasting pains and a slow recovery periods. You are also able to choose from a list of procedures that can improve the state of your pearly whites. Cosmetic dentistry is in fact one of the best options to bring out (or revive) that gorgeous smile of yours and is the modern solution for all your tooth-related woes.
Having a perfect white smile is something that most people desire. However, there are many things that affect one’s ability to maintain a great set of teeth. These include any sort of damage, discoloration, or stains on one’s choppers. In this article, you’ll learn about some of the best ways to keep your smile free from blemishes and stains.
Consider Cosmetic Dentistry
First, consider cosmetic dentistry solutions like porcelain veneers for irreparably damaged and stained teeth. Veneers are thin porcelain made to look like natural teeth, and they may be used to enhance a single tooth or an entire smile. They are an easy and long-lasting remedy for teeth that can no longer be whitened because of intrinsic discoloration, aging, and other factors. In addition to discoloration, porcelain veneers can also improve the condition of chipped, worn down, and misaligned teeth.
Avoid Food, Drinks And Habits That Can Stain Or Discolor Teeth
Using tobacco and drinking dark-colored liquids like coffee, tea, wine, and cola can cause teeth to get yellow or stained. Straws can be used to minimize contact between your teeth and these liquids. Too much fluoride, a number of antibiotics, and trauma may also cause teeth to darken.
Brush, Floss, And Rinse With An Antibacterial Mouthwash
Prevent the buildup of plaque by keeping your teeth clean. Plaque can make your teeth sticky and give teeth-staining substances something to hold on to.
Periodically Brush Your Teeth With Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of the few household items that can actually help whiten teeth. It can work as a mild abrasive that effectively removes surface teeth stains. However, it is not effective for deeper stains. Prolonged use is also not recommended because of its abrasive effect on the teeth’s enamel.
See Your Dentist At Least Twice A Year For Teeth Whitening, Cleaning, And Checkups
Teeth whitening needs to be done repeatedly to maintain the color of the teeth.
Vital whitening, which is used for teeth with live nerves, can be done at home or at the dentist’s clinic using a either a specialized light or a cleaning substance with hydrogen peroxide. This process typically lasts from 1 to 1.5 hours and can take anywhere from 1 to 3 sessions.
A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment, on the other hand, is typically stained from the inside and will require non-vital whitening. For this process, the dentist will have to place the whitening agent inside the teeth and put a temporary filling over it for several days. It will be left in that state until the teeth reaches the desired shade. Unlike vital teeth whitening, this process only needs to be done once.

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental work that improves the color, alignment, position, shape, and size of one’s smile. These benefits are not just visual – bite correction and jaw alignment can reduce headaches and soreness in patients too.
The term gained popularity during the 90’s but has been practiced for centuries. Etruscan and ancient Egyptian civilizations would use ivory, bone, gold, and seashells to create dental crowns and bridges, replace missing teeth, and visually enhance smiles. These practices are the foundations of modern cosmetic dentistry.
What Are The Most Common Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures?
Tooth reshaping is usually recommended for those with mis-shapen or teeth with unequal lengths.
Bonding is a process during which an enamel-like dental composite material is applied to the tooth’s surface and then sculpted and polished to match the surrounding teeth.
Bridges and implants are permanently installed to replace one or multiple missing teeth.
Veneers are custom-made, ultra-thin porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth to close gaps, enhance tooth shape, and even to fix discolored teeth that do not respond to teeth whitening.
Gum lift involves raising the gum tissue and possibly reshaping the bone underneath to create the appearance of longer or more symmetrically aligned teeth.
Bite reclamation is for individuals with excessively worn teeth caused by grinding or chewing on hard foods. Acid reflux can also alter the vertical dimensions of teeth.
Chemical whitening is sometimes called “tooth bleaching,” and is the most common procedure for quickly brightening smiles.
Laser whitening is a more advanced and effective procedure than chemical whitening alone. An argon laser is used to activate the whitening agent and is said to be six times more effective than chemical whitening.
Yes, real relationships develop over time. We all know that. But there are certain situations where an incredible first impression goes a long, long way. One of those times is when you’re advancing your career and interviewing for jobs.
50% Of Interviewers Will Remember Your Smile, 9% Will Remember What You Wore
A recent study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry suggests that half of adults absolutely remember other people’s smiles after having been introduced to them. That’s far more than the 9% who will remember a new acquaintance’s clothing. Cool, lime green shirt (above) but your smile will impress even more!
Brighter Smile = Higher Starting Salary?
Your smile can have a direct impact on your career opportunities. A 2007 study simulating job interviews showed that people were more likely to be offered jobs—and offered higher starting salaries—after they had whitened their teeth. Subjects were also perceived to be more professional and more confident after teeth whitening.
What Will People Remember About YOUR Smile?
It may not always seem fair, but people make assumptions based on one’s smile. The beauty is that, armed with knowledge (and an awesome dentist), You can take charge of the way people perceive you in professional situations such as interviews.
Make A Good Impression So They’ll Get To Know You On The Inside
Sometimes getting past first impressions with flying colors gives you the chance to let the “real” you come through. After all, that’s the most important part. Here’s some additional job hunting advice:
It’s Not About Perfection. It’s About Confidence.
The most important aspect of a great smile isn’t whether or not you have perfectly straight teeth or a perfect smile. It’s all about the confidence your smile brings. If there’s anything causing you to be self-conscious about your smile, talk with us. We can walk you through some ideas, and create a plan to fix the situation if you’d like.
Thank you so much for trusting us with your dental health. Good luck in your pursuit of that new job opportunity!
What is as brittle as glass and at the same time, the hardest substance in your body? Your tooth enamel! Each time you bite down it handles the equivalent of 160 pounds of pressure, time after time after time. Think about how often you bite down during your lifetime. It’s crazy!
Enamel is the hard outer layer of your teeth, built to protect the softer dentine layer, and your super-sensitive pulp.
It’s Amazing How Such A Brittle Substance Handles The Pressure
It’s an engineering marvel. Enamel is actually made up of a dense forest of long rods. These rods start crisscrossing each other as they go deeper into the tooth, diffusing the pressure. It’s like sprawling your body out flat to crawl over an ice-covered pond, spreading the pressure over a wider area.
Mother Nature’s Pattern For Strength
This same concept actually inspired a group of scientists to create glass that is 200 times stronger than normal! Read about it in the article, How to Toughen Glass by Cracking It: A Lesson From Teeth and Shells.
Enamel Is Built To Deal With Pressure But Not Erosion
As strong as your enamel is, it doesn’t deal as well with acid and bacteria. It needs our help for that.
4 Ways Your Enamel CAN Get Worn Down:
- Acidic breakdown (usually from acidic drinks like soda, fruit juices, and sports drinks).
- Abrasion from rough brushing and tooth-whitening toothpastes.
- Bad habits like tooth-grinding.
- High sugar-and-starch diets, which create acid byproducts.
Your Enamel Is Finite So Treat It Well
As amazing as your enamel is, it’s one of the only parts of your body unable to regenerate itself because it’s one of the only parts of your body not comprised of living cells. So protect your enamel by brushing regularly, flossing, and keeping your regularly scheduled checkups.

There’s a big difference between a real smile and a fake smile. And while a polite smile can help smooth over some social situations, a sincere, honest, from-the-heart smile can completely turn the day around.
What Is “The Duchenne Smile?”
The Duchenne Smile was named after 17th century French researcher Duchenne de Bologne. He believed that the key to a real smile (a genuine expression of happiness) was found in the eyes, and although the muscles around your mouth are easy to shape into a smile, the muscles around your eyes (the Orbicularis Orbiti) are only triggered by true happiness.
Do You Know How To Smile?
Smize means “smile with your eyes”. Despite Duchenne’s long-standing theory, recent research (and Tyra Banks) suggests that anyone can fake a “genuine” smile. Can You Spot Fake Smiles? This is really a lot of fun! Take the quiz yourself! What do you think?
One Key To Spotting A Genuine Smile Is Imitation
Smiles are literally contagious. When we see a smile we have a subconscious urge to reflect it back. And when we imitate a smile, we can FEEL whether or not it’s real.In a 2013 study subjects held a pencil in their mouth while scrolling through photos of people smiling. The pencil kept participants from reflecting the expressions they saw, handicapping their ability to read the emotions behind those smiles. Interesting!

FATHERS HAVE A KNACK FOR making us smile—even when we’d prefer to be grouchy! Amazingly, they can usually pressure us into smiling through a simple act or gesture—a grin, a proud look, a really dumb joke.

Yes, Beverly Hills – there is an app for that! The Tooth Fairy app is free and helps formulate how much money the Tooth Fairy is leaving in comparable households.
This app has been produced in conjunction with an annual survey conducted by the credit card company Visa which gauges the average amounts left by the Tooth Fairy during the past year. According to this year’s survey the economy has improved because the average tooth is now getting $3, up 15% from the $2.60 left last year.
More survey results showed:
- 3% of children got less than $1, but that was down from7% last year
- 30% of children got exactly $1 for their lost tooth, about the same as the prior year
- 13% of kids got between $2 and $4
- 18% of those lost teeth were worth $5
- 8% of children got more than $5, up slightly from 2011
If you’ve ever wondered how the Tooth Fairy figured out how much to leave you can check out the app which is available for iPhones and iPads in the Apple App Store. The free calculator uses the survey data and factors in gender, age, income, home state and education levels to formulate how much money the Tooth Fairy is leaving in similar households. I always wondered how she figured that out!
If you are an adult you don’t want to be losing any teeth for the Tooth Fairy to come pick up. Prevention prevents tooth loss so remember to brush, floss and get regular dental cleanings. If a tooth is lost we now have a wonderful, lifelike replacement option – dental implants. Dental implants act as an artificial tooth root and the restoration will look, feel and perform just like your natural tooth.
For more information about dental implants please contact Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. David Frey at 310-276-4537. We’ll be happy to answer your questions and schedule your consultation to see if dental implants are right for you.
Beverly Hills dental patients are like dental patients everywhere and they really don’t like to be bothered with those routine dental checkups. But routine dental exams are an important part of your overall healthcare and, just like any checkup, shouldn’t be skipped. During these routine exams we are not only checking for gum disease and decay, we are also looking for potentially life-threatening conditions including oral cancer.
Did you know that nearly 35,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year? The majority of these cases will be discovered after the cancer has spread to other areas of the body simply because people are not aware of the signs. Actor Michael Douglas has done a wonderful job sharing information about oral cancer since his diagnosis and successful treatment but most people still don’t think it could happen to them.
The rates of oral cancers have been rising dramatically in recent years and they have been rising especially quickly among the young. Regular screening is key for early diagnosis.
Oral cancer can affect many areas in and around your mouth, including your throat and sinuses. Of the estimated 35,000 diagnosed with oral cancer annually, approximately half will survive five years. This depressing statistic is due largely to the fact that because patients do not know what to look for, and because oral cancer is typically painless in its earliest stages.
Contact us if you experience any of the following:
- Red and/or white discolorations of the soft tissue in your mouth;
- A lump or thickening that develops in the mouth or neck;
- Difficulty swallowing; Numbness in or around the mouth;
- Ear pain that you only feel on one side;
- The feeling that something is stuck in your throat;
- Difficulty moving your jaw or tongue
These are all symptoms of oral cancer but don’t panic if you have one. Having one of these symptoms does not always mean you have cancer – some can be signs of other conditions as well. If you experience any of these symptoms for more than 14 days you should visit us right away. If oral cancer is caught early survival rates sky rocket to 80-90%.
Your regular dental checkup can help keep your smile healthy but it can also save your life. Don’t delay, please contact Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. David Frey at 310-276-4537 today.
As a cosmetic dentist treating patients in Beverly Hills I see a lot of dental problems in adults and teens that could have been prevented. Everyone in the family can have healthy teeth for life!
The payoff for prevention includes beautiful, sparkling smiles, better nutrition for your kids because of proper chewing, and they never have to experience toothaches. Because oral health has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy problems and other systemic issues you are also giving them the gift of better overall health.
You keep your body healthy by eating right and exercising and keeping your teeth (and your family’s teeth) healthy is going to require some smart choices and a little work on your part.
- Start prevention efforts early. When those first baby teeth come in they should be gently wiped with a clean, damp cloth or soft brush. Half of all children between 12 and 15 have cavities and the rate of cavities for kids is growing for the first time in 40 years. Why? Too much snacking and sippy cups. You can help protect your child by not putting them to bed with a bottle or sippy cup of milk or juice. Limit milk and juice to mealtimes and give your child water when they are thirsty.
- Seal those molars. Only one-third of children receive these protective coatings but they can significantly reduce cavities.
- Drink tap water instead of bottled. Most water systems add small amounts of fluoride which strengthens teeth and prevents cavities and most bottled water does not contain this. Fluoride toothpaste should be used every day but don’t rinse after brushing – it washes away the fluoride protection.
- Brush twice a day and floss every day. No excuses from any family member – parents are good role models.
- Rinse with water or chew sugarless gum after meals. This is a good time for your children to chew sugarless gum made with xylitol – it actually helps protect teeth from cavities.
- What is good for your body is good for your smile. A steady diet of soda and junk food means lots of tooth decay. Fresh fruits and veggies provide nutrients that make strong teeth.
- Skip the sugary snacks – especially the sticky ones. If you are craving something sweet it is better to have it as part of your meal. Soda is especially hard on teeth because of the combination of sugar and acid. Green tea (make it iced) is a great substitute and can help keep gums healthy.
- Take your kids (and yourself) for regular checkups and cleanings. Those simple appointments every six months can help you avoid bigger problems down the road. Included in your appointment is an oral cancer screening and many other health issues can present in the mouth before other symptoms are felt.
Prevention is a big part of what we do every day and our Beverly Hills cosmetic dentistry office would like to be a part of your prevention team. Please contact Dr. David Frey today at 310-276-4537 to schedule your appointment. Working together you can have beautiful, healthy teeth for life!
As a Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist I see many patients who have damaged their teeth. Lately we have been seeing a new form of damage from energy drinks and sports drinks. A study published in General Dentistry found an alarming increase in the damage teen athletes are doing to their teeth because of constant consumption of these drinks.
To test the damage that the drinks can do to human teeth researchers soaked samples of human tooth enamel in the drinks for 15 minutes and then in saliva for 2 hours. This was repeated four times a day for five days to mimic the exposure that teens are typically getting. When not in testing the samples were stored in artificial saliva. The damage appeared quickly.
After only five days of exposure to either sports or energy drinks there was irreversible damage to dental enamel. Energy drinks actually caused twice as much damage to teeth as sports drinks did.
Teens aren’t the only ones drinking energy and sports drinks. Their parents are consuming plenty as well. The damage causes the teeth to become extremely sensitive and more likely to develop cavities. If tooth sensitivity has suddenly become an issue then energy or sports drinks may be the cause of the problem. Simply stopping use of the drinks won’t bring back tooth enamel and ease the sensitivity — you need to visit your dentist.
Protect your teeth by reducing the use of these drinks. If you or your teen have an energy drink the mouth should be rinsed with water immediately or chew some sugar free gum to help return the acidity levels in the mouth to normal. Don’t brush immediately after consuming these drinks – the softened enamel may be further damaged by the brushing action.
Please contact Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Dr. David Frey today at 310-276-4537 if you or a member of your family are experiencing tooth sensitivity or pain.
Chewing sugarless gum can be good for your teeth in a number of ways. Beverly Hills cosmetic dentistry patients need to know how to keep their smiles as healthy as possible when they aren’t near a toothbrush and chewing gum can help.
A new study done in China showed that frequent gum chewing is associated with higher saliva flow and more saliva means fewer cavities. Saliva is very important in a healthy mouth – it helps wash away food debris and bacteria and also helps remineralize teeth which strengthens them against decay.
People who suffer from dry mouth often have high rates of tooth decay and gum disease because of the reduced saliva flow.
Sugarless gum, especially gum sweetened with xylitol has been shown to benefit oral health. The xylitol, a type of artificial sweetener, not only helps avoid sugar but has been shown to actually inhibit the growth of certain types of oral bacteria.
Try chewing sugarless gum after meals or snacks and it is especially beneficial if you have consumed soft drinks, sports drinks or energy drinks which are all extremely damaging to teeth. Too much of these highly acidic drinks can lead to dental erosion and sensitive, yellow teeth.
Prevention is an important part of what we do and regular dental cleanings can help. Of course you still need to remember to brush and floss (every day).
